Olsen Twin Power - Educate!

The Olsen Twins announcement of attending New York University next fall should keep the grassy patches of the Village even more groomed and stocked with teen boys and dirty older guys than normal. But by enrolling into NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized Study I am sure it will allow the diaper-turned-dapper duo to spend weeks and semesters in L.A., Paris, or wherever to work on those challenging independent study projects. Perhaps the girls can combine disciplines such as American Studies, Child Psychology, and Entertainment Marketing, but let's hope they also take advantage of some drama classes.

My own experience with NYC colleges comes from the year I worked in the admissions office at Eugene Lang College of the New School. Lang was the type of place for students bent in one way or another who wanted to experience downtown New York but couldn't get into NYU. When I was there Nora Ephron's son turned us down to go to Gallatin, which seems to be a haven for these gifted freebirds. Lots of applications came from places like Westlake HS in California which seemed to be a repository of gifted freebirds too, or at least very wealthy "underachievers." It broke my heart when their mothers called after receiving a rejection letter and as the sole male staffer I did my best to have the decision re-considered but usually to no avail.

The biggest highlight of working there was the day Ted Danson came into the office with his daughter for a school visit. I forget if she ever applied formally but I know one celebrity daughter who became one herself that did. Various write-ups of Kate Hudson will say she turned down college for a life of acting. Perhaps, but she was rejected by Lang first. Apparently her SAT's were
S-H-I-T.

Ah, the fabled college life in NYC. Here's hoping the Olsens put the Hiltons to shame.
