Yesterday I explained my Conde Nast obsession, today it's only fair that Lockhart Steele gets the same treatment because he's partly responsible for this site, as ridiculously sad as that sounds. I'll admit, when I first read his site in the summer of '03 I thought it was: 1) pretentious crap 2) painfully irritating 3) obviously gay. You know, the kind of stuff only a person named "Lockhart Steele" could write. The notion that he was "the voice of the Lower East Side" couldn't have been more absurd to me and it seemed like an insult to my beloved neighborhood that everyone was licking his shit up. Sure, that sounds like textbook jealousy and I'm not denying it but I figured I had to do something in the way of restoring a little dignity around Stanton Street. Then we met and I realized he's a genuine guy, not the snob-prick I imagined and in fact, maintains a dorkish charm more than anything else. (I mean really, look at that picture above!)

The game was on at that point and keeping the appearances of a "feud" was good comedy for our very small audiences. Doesn't everyone just wanna see two nerds fight on the playground until one leaves crying with a bloody nose? Answer: yes. Case in point, someone started this site: Krucoff vs. Steele: blog on blog violence, offering cock-ringside commentary to the gayest fight on earth. Also, did I mention that Lockhart-bashing was good for getting links on Gawker? Yeah, let's not stray too far away from my whorish self-promoting intentions.

Nowadays, I hang out with him too much and frankly, I just wish he'd moved to Brooklyn already and be some brownstoning mogul there. But there's more to real estate than meets the guy and to fill the gap -- you heard it here first -- LockhartSteele.com is re-launching on Monday!! Yes, please pass the towel and take two steps back before lunging forward into this pathetic retrospective mess.
