I've provided
my John Waters background before and now that he has a new movie out,
A Dirty Shame, let me explain the connection even further. While attending the U. of Maryland, I took a first date to the College Park dollar theater to see Johnny Depp in
Cry-Baby. Trust me, this was more endearing than it sounds like. For crissakes, she was from Timonium and I bought the extra-large popcorn. She also recognized the rolling hills of Baltimore County in the car scenes and loved it. We split a six-pack back in my dorm room afterwards. Such were my ways of wooing. The movie also offered a really quick glimpse of an extra, Skip Schwink, who lived down the street from me and went on to make
this film. That's a proud moment for Crofton Parkway.
Even better was finding out a college friend's sister played a major part in the classic Hairspray as
Penny Pingleton. I never knew why her acting career ended there as she was pretty fantastic in the role with lines like,
"I wish I was at a hootenanny in Harlem." Me too. Here's to you Tom and Leslie Ann Powers.
Movie memories aside, I give you performance artist Juliana who created a character called "Baltimore Joe" for a
Simple Machines compilation and nails the East Baltimore accent like she's hitching a ride along Holabird Avenue.
