It wasn't a pleasant day when my mom found the lyrics for
Slayer's "Angel Of Death" in the house:
Auschwitz, the meaning of pain
The way that I want you to die
Slow death, immense decay
Showers that cleanse you of your life
She didn't really buy my story that the song was a message of "Holocaust Awareness" reminding us that we should never forget. The "it's really fast which means it's really awesome" tack sunk in the harbor too. A discussion of the song recently evolved on
Casa-de-Sac and I promised
Max I would get to the bottom of Slayer's intent and beliefs on the issue. Didn't take long. God bless (yes, God!) Wikipedia for answering every bar-room question posed by man. (I'm sure they reveal the meaning of life but I dare not look it up 'cause it would spoil the surprise.) For the record, Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman who wrote the song, is anti-Mengele. He says:
"I know why people misinterpret it - it's because they get this knee-jerk reaction to it. When they read the lyrics, there's nothing I put in the lyrics that says necessarily he was a bad man, because to me - well, isn't that obvious?! I shouldn't have to tell you that."
Duh, can't argue with that. Score one for anti-anti-Semitic death metal.
